Because this has to stand as one of the oddest effects films ever. (I'd assume it was Schneer, because I can't imagine Harryhausen campaigning to move out of his wheelhouse like this). Spaceships flying around and crashing into things, painstakingly animated a single frame at a time? That's like hiring a gifted matte artist for the creature effects in "The Thing", asking them to paint the monsters photorealistically, one frame at a time. If someone offered me that job, I'd kindly suggest that they get back on their meds, pronto.<br />The whole thing is so "the wrong tool for the job" that it's no wonder it wasn't Harryhausen's favorite. Especially since EvtFS came 3 years after the exemplary "The War of the Worlds".<br /><br />Don't get me wrong- I like the effects in this movie.
