It's just so SLOW. So many shots begin facing a character, you can count like 3 seconds, and THEN they begin to speak their lines. Something about it makes this movie hard to watch actually. let's not forget the unforgettable synth pads courtesy of vangelis

but really it is great at it's atmospheric world building and some kind of future dystopian melancholyAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03307420743525112063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-73949855012668214432012-06-07T18:23:31.488-05:002012-06-07T18:23:31.488-05:00Whoa! I would like to add that I've always loved the scene where Deckard is in Zhora's dressing room, the character he breaks into to get her attention is just hilarious to me.
Then there's a wonderful look on his face when he's asking her if he can check the dressing room for holes, where he's literally going like 'oh frack, this isn't working at all.' Like you said, the last thing Scott seems interested in is the noir detective plot. Your observations about the characters are also spot on.

On the other hand, who the fuck watches "Blade Runner" for the plot? It's that world, man, it's that world. And as densely detailed and compelling as the visuals are, the soundtrack is equally broad and immersive and stunning, adding layers and layers to the experience of the film. I saw it several times when it first came out, the first disappointed in it as a film, but pulled back again and again by the sensual experience of it. (especially in its original 70mm presentation, with enveloping multichannel Dolby soundscape. WOW.)
You noted the movie shares certain traits with "2001" but I always thought it had a lot in common with "The Shining"- confused and muddled about what it sought to do narratively, but dead-on brilliant about conjuring a very specific, detailed and evocative world.

II'm so happy that the blu-ray restoration finally happened, because picture and sound fidelity is what "Blade Runner" is all about.RickRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17060339578835099120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-41331726484079595712012-06-06T21:13:40.288-05:002012-06-06T21:13:40.288-05:00The book is different (if I remember right) in tha...The book is different (if I remember right) in that it all takes place in one (very long) day and night and is mostly concerned with the changes in Deckard's psychology as regards the replicants. So it's more "about" Deckard than the film is (which is, like you said, not much).

The book is pretty okay, but I would take a bullet for this movie.Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17520552401498998458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-25993808721007728222012-06-06T20:35:01.723-05:002012-06-06T20:35:01.723-05:00Tim, wonderful review, as always! Little to add here, other than that I am completely in agreement with your assessment of how Hauer's performance elevates the film to something beyond a triumph of production design and world-building.

In a personal note, when Mr. Hauer was here in Halifax, filming "Hobo With a Shotgun" there was a wrap party/screening of "The Hitcher" and he graciously sat and chatted with fans after the movie. My proudest fanboy moment in my life will forever be when we got to talking about a series of commercials that featured Anthony Hopkins delivering iconic movie monologues for the British equivalent of AMC (one of them being the "I've seen things.." speech), which led to Mr. Hauer then doing an impersonation of Anthony Hopkins reciting his final lines. Essentially, in my geek brain, I can now tell myself I sat next to Roy Batty as he gave that speech (but with no dove). Just had to share. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-53210317644902097062012-06-06T18:34:52.463-05:002012-06-06T18:34:52.463-05:00Let me also add I recently read Androids.
