Those sets!!! As one comment was posted, this was the summer of "Star Wars". This was when the Hollywood blockbuster took over - and this is the Bond film to compliment that movement: definitely not the art of the "New Hollywood" early 70s, but a great, huge beautiful all-out Hollywood film. I just still feel the action is not as interesting as thought. I agree with your remark of a slight need for better choreography - and the climax is more for a standard action film, not a Bond one. Also, I agree that Bach plays what should be one of the best Bond girls, but I feel is more bland than even Ekland in the last film (sorry, I know I'm striking a nerve here). And that corny Hamlisch score! Oh, boy! Still, how does one not love this film? Well, I don't. But I really, really like it.redwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07359138209814839680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-30401708934502412282014-01-07T21:46:04.441-06:002014-01-07T21:46:04.441-06:00Your reviews are fair and to the point, Tim. Even ...Your reviews are fair and to the point, Tim. Even though I found these late, I'm really enjoying them now, as well as attempting to get others over here to take a look. WebDog (previous comment to mine) makes some good points to why this has to be Moore's best, at least in the public eye. I've always known that I enjoy this one more than any of the other Moore films simply because it works better than any of the rest of his, on ALL levels. However, I really liked your review of "MWTGG", for that was the one I wished would have been better, as you mentioned. It was more the spy thriller and offered my favorite villain, although wasted in that film to a good degree. Part of my heart, I think, will always go with that one, as bad as it can be. I'm just not a big blockbuster film fan. Where I DO love the Bond life here, with all the globetrotting, beautiful scenery, and Gilbert's return to widescreen, the grand finale is just a bit anti-climactic (perhaps even more so than the previous film), with a poor villain and long, drawn out exploding set (impressive, but not near as attractive as Stromberg's lair). Where this is a LOT more interesting than YOLT - and moves much better (likely one of the smoothest, really) - I can see comparisons with that one, as well (another one I always had a love/hate with).redwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07359138209814839680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-1562726814025948112012-08-07T08:57:34.903-05:002012-08-07T08:57:34.903-05:00Spy is when the producers decided to quietly reboo...Spy is when the producers decided to quietly reboot Bond's character.

One of the issues of the last two films was that the writers admitted they still had Connery in mind, which doesn't really work with Moore's comedic tinge.

Moore's reworked Bond takes a leaf from the books and is back to being a British gentleman of refined taste as opposed to setting him up as a gadgeteer playboy of the 1970's, complete with state of the art coffee machine in his house. The gadgets get pretty scarce from now on - I suspect it's why there's a Q branch workshop scene in nearly every film as it's a quick way to put in gadgets without having Bond be reliant on them.

It's also the first Moore film where he drinks a Martini as they deliberately put him on Bourbon to avoid Connery comparisons as well as the first to have an attempt to give Bond a background with his dead wife.

Plus it's worth noting the series has well and truly begun to eat its own tail as Spy is effectively a reworking of YOLT.

The problem with Stromberg is that he was supposed to be Bolfeld / SPECTRE but Kevin McClory's lawsuit prevented that. The character earns some points for attempting to play up the audience expectation for a Bond villain "I don't need money!" but is utterly outplayed by Jaws who is genuinely terrifying.

I put it as Moore's best Bond film on account of him not being way too old.WebDoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06173112905462284335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-92134215685730166032012-08-07T08:45:20.378-05:002012-08-07T08:45:20.378-05:00Well, I'm now going to listen to "Nobody ...Well, I'm now going to listen to "Nobody Does It Better" in honor of Marvin Hamlisch's untimely passing yesterday.franklinshepardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13858074176921317138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-9333170237665719712012-08-06T13:31:06.378-05:002012-08-06T13:31:06.378-05:00Caroline Munro. I was 16 when it came out, and it was sharing the summer with "Star Wars", for crying out loud. Just a great big fun escapist wad of bubble gum.
And those sets! Good GOD, those sets.

Also the best movie poster of the series. It's gloriously groovy.RickRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17060339578835099120noreply@blogger.com
