I did like Deep and Eva Green preformance and visuals are great but the humor in the script is so weak (especialy in the middle) then it's almost painfull to re-visit. To bad. Hope Big Eyes will make up for it.
Pan Miluśhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01364446151493198587noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-43331532106356916582012-05-27T23:46:07.186-05:002012-05-27T23:46:07.186-05:00That is a fair point. I suppose I meant that he never makes any fun of Ed at all, despite it seeming (to me, at least), the most approach to take to his life story.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-46943725146014828532012-05-27T23:19:50.636-05:002012-05-27T23:19:50.636-05:00"there's barely a moment in that film whe..."there's barely a moment in that film where he's mocking the characters."

Really? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2lf84TVyFQDaniel Silberberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08685707813625269747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-61542538143372553532012-05-22T22:23:39.239-05:002012-05-22T22:23:39.239-05:00I saw this last night and agree with everything yo...I saw this last night and agree with everything you said, pretty much. I was mesmerized by the visuals, turned off by Depp's performance (though I loved plenty of the jokes, I'm afraid), and moderately amused by everything else. Maybe with Frankenweenie coming out Burton will finally start heading on a better, though perhaps lesser path.jjjonatronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11572727325348235494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-46536976324083903282012-05-18T07:24:52.723-05:002012-05-18T07:24:52.723-05:00I felt like it was a nominal return to form (its p...I felt like it was a nominal return to form (its plot is sort of Beetlejuice meets Edward Scissorhands) but that it was so awkward that I hated more than Alice or Planet, both of which at least had some nominal amount of ambition. The actors were caged in, except for Depp, who has utterly forgotten the meaning of restraint. The production design of the house was good, but the CGI took away from its tactile presence.

But mainly, I think the movie fails because it's about a man out of time, set in a time period unfamiliar to the target audience. It's just Burton indulging his own nostalgia, right down to the music (Moody Blues and T.Rex? Tim you topical mofo!) And its sexuality is incredibly anachronistic, with the grossly sexualized Moretz, Heathcote's virginal purity, Pfeiffer's starched matriarch and Angelique's unending jealousy and man hunger. Even Carter, playing a somewhat more modern woman, is presented as a joke for it. It's not very faithful, but at the same time it borrows too many characters for its own good. While in the show its thrown-together nature had a certain charm, here it seems lazy. After a while, the movie just becomes the Barnbas and Angelique show, with Victoria and the family fading from our minds and just reappearing when they need to.Christopher Neesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06280748568762511164noreply@blogger.com
