Nat...I totally have to revise my previous comment! Natalie, you're absolutely right: the songs are not that bad. When I got the DVD of this movie, I found myself playing it a few more times for fun (and I'm Timmy Brayton's age!), and I'll admit, I like "You Can't Keep a Good Dog Down," and even the alligator song, "Let's Make Music Together" stuck in my head to my delight.

The only song I find completely unnecessary is "What's Mine is Yours." Charlie sings this to show how sharing is caring, as if to assure child viewers that Charlie is truly a good dog, but I think his character arc is convincing enough without that sequence. There's also a disturbing part where Anne-Marie curtsies to greet the puppies, and they totally ignore her. How rude! That disturbed me more than the random alligator scene; heck, the alligator was funny, and he was useful at the end of the film.

On to more serious things. "All Dogs Go to Heaven" is actually not that comparable to "Ice Age" or "Shrek." It's most comparable counterpart is actually "Oliver and Comapny" (with its gangster dogs and sweet girl), but, as I agree with Tim's review on "Oliver," "All Dogs" wins. I guess I compared the latter film to recent CGI output to show my partiality to animated movies made back in the day, even the less-than-perfect ones like "All Dogs." If this film could make a grown up cry 20 years after its release; than this old dog truly lives forever.KayMartha12https://www.blogger.com/profile/18374583887079610861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-42807845117846163462011-09-11T14:12:25.255-05:002011-09-11T14:12:25.255-05:00This is a movie sadly overlooked by most. The songs are better in Mermaid, true, but I never thought the songs were that bad! How can anyone hate "You Can't Keep a Good Dog down?"Nataliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11525818635165140426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-84093416551435390822011-08-07T14:22:28.428-05:002011-08-07T14:22:28.428-05:00"running from Carface's laser gun - a stu..."running from Carface's laser gun - a stupid idea introduced to avoid bringing too much real-world violence into the film; the script called for a tommy gun"

Never in my life will I understand the reasoning behind that damn laser gun. Does this mean that guns are scarier than Hell?

"unmelodic noodling mostly written by Charles Strause, the creator of the deathless Annie"

My God, this explains so much...Trishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08108657342054862720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-86892892386362251682011-06-19T19:25:11.955-05:002011-06-19T19:25:11.955-05:00"...at least his vision of feature animation ..."...at least his vision of feature animation lived on."

That was true during the Disney Renaissance, but I wish it were true today! Not only am I a fan of traditional, hand drawn animation, but I also find many of the pre-CGI films more intelligent and worthwhile. Thank you for giving due credit to Don Bluth's 3rd best film (in my opinion, of course; my number one is "NIMH" and number two "Land Before Time").

Some parents found the dark aspects of "All Dogs" off - putting, but at least they served a thematic purpose. Unfortunately, this film was notorious to critics as "not The Little Mermaid," but today, I think its more comparable to films found in the comedy genre such as "Ice Age" and "Shrek." It is a far superior film.

You're right about its mediocre songs, though. When I saw this in 4th grade, the songs lost me, but I kept popping in my Little Mermaid VHS over 50 times. Reviewing it as an adult, I still do not care for the songs, but the film overall - yeah, they don't make them like this anymore!KayMartha12https://www.blogger.com/profile/18374583887079610861noreply@blogger.com
