Sure, it's nothing great or particularly interesting, but at least it's not annoying and obnoxious, like most examples of the genre. I also find it appealing that it presents emotional disorders as something that can be coped with, rather than a Great Oscar-Worthy Tragedy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-15523233470630960312013-01-14T07:33:20.406-06:002013-01-14T07:33:20.406-06:00I really liked this film & was surprised how g...I really liked this film & was surprised how good Cooper was. Lawrence gives a very good performance considering her character has little depth.

Apart from Weaver's Oscar nomination, this film deserves the attention it's getting.

It has it's flaws & I think the film stagnates from the football ground scene onwards but I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.suzyqhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15542142090093110361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-78572215653299324902013-01-13T09:39:25.659-06:002013-01-13T09:39:25.659-06:00As someone who does suffer from both mental illnes...As someone who does suffer from both mental illness (latent depression and agoraphobia) and a physical handicap (cerebral palsy), I tend to be sensitive to the romanticised and sanctimonious portrayal of these thing that I frequently see in movies. That being said, I do think this movie did a good job avoiding those pitfalls. In particular, I appreciated the scenes where Cooper's character would flip out, because they really captured the humiliation that comes with an illness at times like that. And I like how Lawrence's character accepted her illness as a part of who she is, but that didn't make her quirky and carefree; y'know, that fucking bullshit.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the reason I liked this film is because I found it to be less "mentally ill people are like you and I, only more free-spirited and quirkier," and more "mentally ill people are like you and I, only mentally ill."Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107667687751077093noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-14820268619601458392013-01-12T19:25:53.631-06:002013-01-12T19:25:53.631-06:00I almost didn't bring up BUB and Susan, becaus...I almost didn't bring up BUB and Susan, because it's one of my favorite comedies, but there's so little actual human feeling there, like there is in fellow crazy manic screwball His Girl Friday, for example. I by no means want to slight Hepburn, because it's a technically great piece of comedy acting.

"I like the story but not the writing" is a perfect way of summing up the script, I'd say.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-73570952086525278862013-01-12T18:58:19.849-06:002013-01-12T18:58:19.849-06:00I clicked on your page while writing my review of ...I clicked on your page while writing my review of this and I read through just because. A few brief points that are just stuck in my craw - the script and its pride in itself is mildly troubling then vaguely annoying and the ultimately so exasperating and the direction doesn't serve it well. And I like the story but not the writing (if that makes sense) and I like the characters and want to like their experiences but it's all so smarmy (for want of a better word) with some of beats. And it's so easy to watch that even as it's generally okay it frustrates me because it all seems so...wasted.

I have no prior feeling son Cooper either way, but he's easily the MVP so that are times he seems to be acting in a different scenario from those around him, to the films detriment. And, the grace that the actors pull off even when many are not giving great performances (Lawrence comes off much too inconsistent and frenzied for me to buy her Tiffany as a person) to make it pleasant feels undeserved when the denouement comes.

(The only thing I may explicitly argue with you on is the use of the MPDG thing but only because the acronym itself leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. And I'd almost argue with you on the Hepburn thing because she's my favourite persons but Susan's concept of herself is so deliberately frenetic bordering on illusory, your point is a fair one.)Andrew K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01104647944747041277noreply@blogger.com
