Enjoying it immensely. I read somewhere that Goldeneye was meant originally as a vehicle for Dalton. That would make the "outdated dinosaur" speech much more pointed and would give in more gravitas. Brosnan has always been my least favorite just because he has no personality of his own. His voice is too high and he himself is too slight and, I don't know, Remington Steel-ish. Bean's so good ... but he just doesn't stick in your mind like the more garish ones. Then again, it's kind of like the movie. It's one of the best, yet it has a Bond who, at times, is just a bit wishy-washy. I really, really want to love this one, like I feel about OHMSS or the early Connerys. It's better, in many ways. A true thriller, as you say. I just feel that Brosnan was always the one to almost make it in the character (primarily due to this very film), but just missed it.redwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07359138209814839680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-45651136787629893122013-02-15T11:56:30.880-06:002013-02-15T11:56:30.880-06:00I've never been able to make myself watch more...I've never been able to make myself watch more than a few minutes of this movie because of Eric Serra's score, which in my taste has to be probably the most mind-bogglingly god-awful score for a movie ever. So thanks for validating my thoughts with this:
Certain passages are so electronic, so plonking, so insubstantial, that I cannot imagine what, other than rock-solid release date obligations, could have permitted the producers to allow the thing into theaters without a massive overhaul.
as well as this:
anonymous, grating noise on display everywhere else in the movie.

I didn't know about Ottman, I'll try to get there when I get the blu-ray.

Unsurprisingly, Serra was not invited back
Thank God.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-49606950604700756022012-10-07T11:17:45.506-05:002012-10-07T11:17:45.506-05:00Les Misérables, and it is now #2. Except, he never shows up in "my favorite Bond villains" lists that I see, and even within the Brosnan movies, he's easier to overlook than the bizarre (Even More) Evil Rupert Murdoch of TND or the Pain-Resistant Bullet Man of TWINE, just on account of not being gimmicky.

As for TND - Lord knows, it's not at the level of the next two, and it's possible that I'm doing exactly what I did with GoldenEye: downgrading it unfairly in memory because of how fucking terrible they were. Next week will tell. But even as a fanboy teenager, I was never onboard with the whole Evil Media Mogul angle.

Jeremy- Hate the music though I do, I can't go so far as to call it worse than Bill Conti's nightmarish pseudo-techno in For Your Eyes Only.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-29672573888267313002012-09-30T11:30:02.414-05:002012-09-30T11:30:02.414-05:00Mysterious F you are not alone in your love for To...Mysterious F you are not alone in your love for Tomorrow Never Dies. Finally, we get a main bad guy who refers to him as "James" instead of "Mr. Bond", and that's a very important distinction.

You're right about Brosnan, in that he's a jack-of-all-trades Bond, but doesn't have mastery over any one area, so he kinda falls in the cracks when I'm thinking about Bond answers. It's really a shame that this is only really good script he got. As much as I ADORE CR, I wonder what Pierce could have done with a script that good? I think the same thing about OHMSS, if Connery hadn't got one too many goofball scripts that he got bored of the role by TB.

And yes, the music. is. DREADFUL. Holy christ, the worst score in the entire series. Goddamn it hurts that most of the movie is so good and the music is just so BAD.

You got 3 mediorce-to-awful Bond movies to go Tim, and then you can bathe in the gloriness of Casino Royale. We're largely in agreement, although I was got and cold on the credits - I found they lurched from striking to ghastly and back so often I got whiplash, and the single element I remember most is unfortunately the two-faced woman.

I absolutely agree that Sean Bean was a terrific villain, though, I had no idea that the consensus felt otherwise. Aside from the pretty dreadful scene where he manhandles Natlya and forces a kiss on her. It is, to me, the one sour note in an otherwise pitch-perfect performance.Chris Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07633087241215626035noreply@blogger.com
