It is meant to be one of the blog's running jokes, like making fun of Josh Hartnett, which has, alas, not happened in quite a while.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-30938098893491787662012-04-11T14:55:10.528-05:002012-04-11T14:55:10.528-05:00"X takes place about a month after its releas..."X takes place about a month after its release date, thus X is science-fiction", which I think I've done maybe a dozen, two dozen times at this point, is my way of being snotty about movies (usually rom-coms) that for no good reason, make a point of taking place later in the same calendar year as their release date (I think I made the same joke about "X is a costume drama" at one point). It's meant to be a flippant bit of sarcasm, and I didn't realise it actually bothered people; I shall check myself in the future.

For reference, though, my actual judgments about genre are always reflected in the post tags at the very bottom.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-1025081976774778972012-04-11T14:47:45.316-05:002012-04-11T14:47:45.316-05:00I'm glad we've all identified why that sta...I'm glad we've all identified why that statement was a joke. Science Fiction is a subgenre of speculative fiction; in order for this movie to be considered to be Science Fiction, it would have to first qualify as Speculative Fiction and so it would require fantastical plot elements. In the same vein, movies which are set in the past are not neccessary Fantasy movies.

If Sean William Scott's character really is as much of an immature jerk as ever, at that age, then perhaps 'Dystopian Fiction' is a fairly accurate description.polynomialpalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18202324172573764841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-81946774577516208362012-04-11T09:34:43.245-05:002012-04-11T09:34:43.245-05:00Perhaps an example of this lack of foresight would...Perhaps an example of this lack of foresight would be a movie filmed in 2000 about a romantic comedy taking place in the twin towers in October 2001.Allari Ruizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03069983881481124150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-32261214630284390582012-04-11T01:40:36.464-05:002012-04-11T01:40:36.464-05:00Two things: 1) What an ungodly mangled poster! The version I've seen on the subway, consisting of the very same photographs of each of the individual actors only arranged differently, is vastly superior if only for the fact that Nicholas and Thomas are looking at each other, in what is actually a rather touching depiction of two old friends reunited, as opposed to at nothing in particular.

2) This is the second time I've seen you refer to a movie as "science fiction" for the mere fact that, according to some fluke of its dating of its fictional events, it must necessarily take place in the future. Is that really enough to make a movie science fiction? I mean, if I write a story about perfectly mundane, realistic people and events, and then let slip that it happens to take place two weeks, two months, or even two years from my time of writing it, does it then qualify as science fiction? I would have thought that in order for a work to qualify as science fiction it would have to depict either currently non-existent technology or aliens.Colinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952276101161849381noreply@blogger.com
