"was secretly made a decade or two later by people trying to make a movie that evoked The Eighties to almost comic effect" watching this movie for the first time and said the exactly the same thought to my roommate. There is undoubtly something else going on in this movie, a feeling that's hard to identity though is always present. genuis review. And then I got to 1500 words and was all, "OK, 1500 words on To Live and Die in L.A. is sort of excessive", and posted it without further thought. It was quite possibly my favorite part of the whole movie.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-366111793201926092011-02-22T18:21:46.847-06:002011-02-22T18:21:46.847-06:00I've gotta tell you: I am a hardcore eighties-...I've gotta tell you: I am a hardcore eighties-synthpop fetishist, so the soundtrack is one of the things I like best about the film. The montage sequence while the title track plays is one of my favorite things ever. Would it be overly facile of me to point out that the whole "synth" aspect of the music goes along with the film's counterfeiting theme?

Glad you liked it for the most part. I probably do a bit more, and I agree with Bryce that you're undervaluing Dafoe a little. I find his presence really powerful, and how arresting is the scene in which he's doing the actual counterfeiting? VERY arresting, is how arresting. The only thing in the movie that really doesn't work for me is the car chase sequence--not that it isn't technically accomplished, but the film is not at heart an action film, and to drag everything to a halt for twenty-odd minutes to show us cars driving around? Bit of a momentum-killer, for me.

As you maybe saw, the DVD includes as a bonus feature a studio-mandated alternate ending, which is supposed to be, for lack of a better word, comic, where…well, not to spoil anything, but instead of what happens, Chance and Vukovich get reassigned to Alaska. It's pretty amazingly awful.GeoX, one of the GeoX boys.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14658452994152399308noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-1723046152424622662011-02-22T17:04:02.096-06:002011-02-22T17:04:02.096-06:00I thought Dafoe's performance in Saints was th...I thought Dafoe's performance in Saints was the only good thing about the movie... it was just so creepy that it had to be on purpose, like Shadow of the Vampire.The.Watcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06746957245529915320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-61727925107640593872011-02-22T15:59:17.977-06:002011-02-22T15:59:17.977-06:00I'm with Bryce - just that one screencap has g...I'm with Bryce - just that one screencap has got me itching to reapproach this film.Neil Fulwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14686296295535235988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-53694667504761542362011-02-22T13:00:59.593-06:002011-02-22T13:00:59.593-06:00That was one fantastic screen cap.
Nice analysis...That was one fantastic screen cap.

Nice analysis but I think Masters is a much more interesting villain then given credit for. True, I find Willem Dafoe to be a magnetic actor no matter what he's doing (provided that thing in question isn't starring in The Boondock Saints) And I think he gives Masters a dead eyed reptilian reflectiveness that makes a good match for the shallow Chance. As well as being truly freaky rather then just standard 80's villain "freaky". Call it the Mr. Joshua effect.Bryce Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17040954580033470664noreply@blogger.com
