The "sequel" has a more of a tendency to push those buttons, and not just in the political sense (re: Delpy listing all the problems of the world). Like the characters, we're in a place of tension between a total recall of the last movie and something else, something singular.

3) Kiarostami's CERTIFIED COPY obviously owes a lot to these films, but goddammit if it isn't just as mind-blowing. In practice…well, I didn't love it. Okay, I'll come clean; I didn't even like it that much. I freely admit that this is exactly the sort of situation where my opinion might shift entirely were I to see it again, but my first impression was that all of the dialogue was so suffocatingly mannered that I simply couldn't identify with these people as people on any level. It's no doubt the case that some of this is the point; that they're deliberately obfuscating their feelings, but I really got the very strong impression that some of this is just who they really are. And the intensely artificial structure didn't help either; it got to the point where I was thinking, SHIT! They just got on another form of transportation! Now they're going to natter on for another fifteen minutes! Gah!

I don't know what else to say. I am NOT being deliberately contrarian here, and I'd love it if I had the same reaction that other people did, but what can you do?

One thing that DID sorta kind work for me was the ambiguity of the ending. And now presumably the new movie will smash that all to shreds. Hmph.GeoX, one of the GeoX boys.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14658452994152399308noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-28579472238380579712012-10-01T23:44:52.657-05:002012-10-01T23:44:52.657-05:00Dear Jeremy,
