This probably isn't the best f...@ Not Fenimore

This probably isn't the best forum to get into this and I know Mr. Brayton over the years has been very good at keeping the conversation on cinema, but I'll clarify what I meant : Despite the IRA, I'm sympathetic toward Ireland, given the attrocities committed against them by the British. Hopefully that's made the sentence less clumsy but if it's still offensive then that might be inherent in the nature of the conversation, in that it's difficult expressing an opinion on Northern Ireland that offends absolutely no one, in much the some way all Palestinian/Israeli opinions will offend someone.

Let's agree though that in the midst of 1990s Hollywood's strange fascination with bomb construction, Blown Away is at the very least an artistically bankrupt film and possibly ranks among Jeff Bridges' and Tommy Lee Jones' very worst performances.TheConciseStatementhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14734678336303615613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-3653052688077265972014-01-20T14:47:54.777-06:002014-01-20T14:47:54.777-06:00TheConsiseStatement: For the record though, I'...TheConsiseStatement: For the record though, I'm not wholly unsympathetic to British attrocities against Ireland.

I assume I know what you're trying to say there but *man* does that need some rephrasing. That said, Hollywood does have a weird habit of using the IRA as their go-to "morally ambiguous freedom-fighter/terrorist" group, in a way that's pretty distasteful considering what the actual IRA was and did, yeah. Not Fenimorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05135812849405775125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-83090637964883043772014-01-19T15:35:12.702-06:002014-01-19T15:35:12.702-06:00I thought Patriot Games was an example of Hollywoo...I thought Patriot Games was an example of Hollywood's troublesome (no pun intended - actually fuck it, I'll take it) strategy of implying, "Oh no this isn't the nice, cuddly, morally justifiable IRA - this is a horrible rogue, splinter cell." And then I re-visited the outright offensive Blown Away from 1994. Well PG looks progressive by comparison because boy did I underestimate how low Hollywood could sink. I haven't seen The Devil's Own, but I'mm not sure I want to. I honestly think 9/11 did a lot to de-romanticise the notion of 'the underdog freedom fighter'.

For the record though, I'm not wholly unsympathetic to British attrocities against Ireland. Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday is probably my favourite film on this subject. Come to think of it, The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a really terrific piece of work too.TheConciseStatementhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14734678336303615613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-21004254873691229992014-01-18T21:25:41.466-06:002014-01-18T21:25:41.466-06:00I kept waiting for Godzilla to show up and stomp o...I kept waiting for Godzilla to show up and stomp on the city below in this review.

I kid, I kid.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04546972990126033036noreply@blogger.com
