There are certainly exceptions to my rule - any Spielberg/Kaminski film in 2.35 is going to look pretty great - but in the main, I find it too full of deadspace. I'm not joking when I say that my favorite single thing about The Avengers was that Whedon and McGarvey went for the more intimate boxy 1.85.

dfa- Thanks for the insight. I will admit, I usually start drifting, badly, after the last shot of Doc Ock.

Benjamin- It comes down to the garbage scene feeling like it just suddenly happens - why are all those people on the bridge just like that? - while the subway sequence feels like it has more buildup, both in the film as a whole (all the chatter about "we need a hero"), and in the way the scene itself is constructed.

Cody- Fantastic moment, agreed. I do think that the Raimiesque sense of humor is what's going to be most painfully lacking from the new one.

Mark- As far as I know. I've never actually thought to double-check it. It's certainly not a common name.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-36407758916380332972012-06-30T16:40:26.687-05:002012-06-30T16:40:26.687-05:00Funny, they are showing the first film on AXN LatA...Funny, they are showing the first film on AXN LatAm now, quite timely to weigh in your thoughts.. I always really appreciated the easy marriage of action, humor, and pathos Raimi's Spidey run pulled off. I don't think anyone would disagree that Marc Webb is filling some big shoes.Codyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10497021380833652292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-53277313512709763512012-06-30T08:23:24.815-05:002012-06-30T08:23:24.815-05:00It's interesting you hated the 'New Yorker...It's interesting you hated the 'New Yorkers pelt Green Goblin with garbage' bit in the first movie but very much enjoy the ending of the train fight. I forgot the former existed (and now that you've mentioned it I recall hearing something about it being added as post-9/11 New York unity thing) and was annoyed by the latter, which--much like the rest of the movie--went too far over the top.Benjaminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14709333325776591295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-60474764694584770252012-06-30T06:30:05.174-05:002012-06-30T06:30:05.174-05:00"for making it quite so easy on Peter in the ..."for making it quite so easy on Peter in the very last scene" Tim, this is one of those movies I have obsessed over, and I can tell you that in the very last shot, a close up of MJ, Elfman plays a sad note; the ending is thus ambivalent about Peter's happiness.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-37262158134573627642012-06-30T05:22:34.370-05:002012-06-30T05:22:34.370-05:00Haha, you're gonna hate this, but I actually p...Haha, you're gonna hate this, but I actually prefer 2:35 to 1:85, not for any particular reason but mostly cos I grew up with those black bars and that's kinda how I define a movie and what it should look like.

When I see a full frame picture, like Dark Knight's IMAX scenes, it feels weird and off.The.Watcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06746957245529915320noreply@blogger.com
