Allow me to make it up by responding, many weeks late:

The difference, for me, is one of tone: Think Like a Man is not smart, and knows it; Scream is not smart, and thinks that by saying "Look at how stupid I am!" it gets to pretend that it's therefore smart. And given that I generally like the movies Scream is mocking, or at least find them culturally fascinating, I'm not moved by its conviction that they are irredeemably terrible.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09491952893581644049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-3514738073960677372012-04-29T00:00:46.850-05:002012-04-29T00:00:46.850-05:00Yeah, Steve Harvey makes me seethe with rage. Deny him sex until he commits, charmingly referring to sex as "the cookie."
2.) When you go scuba diving, understand that I am an anxious controlling prick who starts panicking at the thought of you doing something without me, demanding that I be given some scuba gear that I don't know how to use to make sure you're safe from something that you've been trained to do while I haven't, and then come up from the water and reassure me because you know what a big paranoid baby I am and never try to scuba dive again because you know it makes my penis feel small.

Seriously.MrRoivashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12018731012247569416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-41456797196227289712012-04-25T08:08:32.968-05:002012-04-25T08:08:32.968-05:00Tim, I've noticed that you rarely seem to adhe...Tim, I've noticed that you rarely seem to adhere to what you said in your Scream review. I'm paraphrasing a little bit, but you essentially said something to the effect of "The argument that movies can acknowledge their weaknesses and even pretend that this acknowledgement turns their weaknesses into strengths gets zero traction with me." Yet in this review, you say, "...this leaves the film with a certain self-aware hokiness that make the most contrived bends the plot takes in the back half - and they are some excruciatingly contrived bends - a bit more palatable, since the movie doesn't appear to take them any more seriously than we do..."

I'll admit that I haven't seen the fill, but it sounds like you're saying that the film has contrivances, but because the film acknowledges that they are contrivances that somehow makes it ok. What's the difference between this film's self-awareness and Scream's?Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07865927808936178525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-41734334000195666232012-04-25T02:10:25.600-05:002012-04-25T02:10:25.600-05:00Just thought that you should be aware of what qual...Just thought that you should be aware of what quality advice Harvey dispensed while he was out promoting the book, Tim:

"You sitting up there talking to a dude and he tells you he’s an atheist, you need to pack it up and go home. You talking to a person who don’t believe in God . . . what’s his moral barometer? Where’s it at? It's nowhere."

Not saying that has any bearing on the film's quality...But the book it's based on sounds fairly ludicrous.Christopher Neesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06280748568762511164noreply@blogger.com
