Then I was just embarrassed for Mila Kunis. Why didn't anyone tell her to reel it? My first and biggest impression upon viewing Oz was that no one involved gave one actual shit about the project.Calebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18374497545791328382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-15518691555734788722013-03-14T13:09:54.100-05:002013-03-14T13:09:54.100-05:00The problem, as I see it, is filmmakers CAN'T ...The problem, as I see it, is filmmakers CAN'T do "magical escapism" at the moment because their PERSONAL worldviews are so dark, so caught up in battling whatever they must battle to achieve success, that everything they do is automatically clouded by those inner shadows.

The mythical world will always determine how we see the world. It imposes honesty in that regard (no matter how dishonest we may or may not be.)

Heroes battling darkness and winning is, in my view, part of the old paradigm. Though it always wears the cloak of intrepid, forward-thinking courage, it's fundamentally a conservative myth, intent upon preserving the status quo.

In general, again in my view, myths of the new paradigm have heroes battling darkness and LOSING YET WINNING by coming to realize that the conventional goal they battled to achieve was false, while life in fact was giving them what they needed all along once they surrendered to it.

Silver Linings Playbook, for example, (whatever you may have thought of the film), fits that myth perfectly. I am confident we will see more of these films in the immediate future.

RobAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-16315400348999722152013-03-13T17:19:43.426-05:002013-03-13T17:19:43.426-05:00Even if this is an alright movie, I've decided...Even if this is an alright movie, I've decided that that cleavagey witch on the poster represents all that's wrong with movies... nay, everything in the world.Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13178975866741187681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14812333.post-11935154627563712682013-03-13T01:40:11.850-05:002013-03-13T01:40:11.850-05:00This is the next in a line of Iger-era Disney movi...This is the next in a line of Iger-era Disney movies to follow in the same formula: an outsider who is foretold by prophesy bands together with a troop of misfits to journey through a CGI heavy land and rid it of its evil despot.

This was the story for Alice and John Carter and Tron Legacy and, if recent rumors prove true, the Brad Bird Tomorrowland project.

This is cynical, creative bankruptcy of the highest level. They are shilling us the CGI/3D product, and not out of any desire to examine a character or theme or to particularly tell us any story. And I'm increasingly frustrated that first rate filmmakers - actors and directors and crews alike - are submitting themselves to this.hayleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01203127598513280855noreply@blogger.com
